about 40 km from Thanjavur
Kumbakonam
The temple town at the centre of the Navagraha circuit, and the base for Darasuram and the Mahamaham tank.
Kumbakonam has more working temples in walking distance of each other than anywhere else in the delta, and it is the practical centre of the Navagraha circuit — eight of the nine planetary temples sit within an hour's drive, and the ninth is not much further. Pilgrims doing the full circuit almost always navigate from here, which is why our itineraries quote distances from Kumbakonam rather than from Thanjavur.
The town itself is worth unhurried time. The Mahamaham tank draws an enormous gathering once every twelve years, and Adi Kumbeswarar, Sarangapani and Nageswaran are all substantial temples within the old town. Just outside it, at Darasuram, the Airavatesvara Temple is the third of the Great Living Chola Temples and the most finely carved of them — smaller than Thanjavur's and far more detailed.

Questions people ask
Are all nine Navagraha temples near Kumbakonam?
Eight of the nine are within about an hour of Kumbakonam, and the ninth, Tirunallar, is further south in the Karaikal district. Our Navagraha tours cover all nine in a single day.
Can you do Kumbakonam as a day trip from Thanjavur?
Yes. It is roughly 40 km, and our Kumbakonam temple tour is a day trip with pickup and drop at your Thanjavur hotel.
What is the difference between Darasuram and the Thanjavur Big Temple?
Both are UNESCO-inscribed Chola temples, but they are opposite in character. Thanjavur is about scale — the tallest vimana and the largest blocks. Darasuram is about detail, at perhaps a quarter of the size, and rewards a slow walk around the base.
