Kumbakonam has been called a temple town so often that the phrase has stopped meaning anything. What it actually is: a small, dense town where a dozen major temples sit within a few kilometres of each other, several of them among the most significant Vaishnavite and Shaivite shrines in Tamil Nadu. This day covers five of them — Adi Kumbeswarar, Sarangapani, Chakrapani, Swamimalai and Uppiliappan. It is a deliberately unhurried selection. You could see more temples in a day, and you would remember fewer of them. Swamimalai is one of the six abodes of Murugan and involves a climb of sixty steps. Uppiliappan sits a little outside town and is quieter than the others, which is often the one people end up talking about afterwards. Travel is by private AC car with a driver who knows the town's one-way system, which sounds trivial until you have seen the alternative during festival season.
