Two days across the Kaveri delta, ending at one of the most unusual temples in India. Day one moves through the Chola heartland — the Big Temple at Thanjavur, Airavatesvara at Darasuram, and Gangaikonda Cholapuram, the capital that Rajendra Chola built to mark his march to the Ganges. Day two takes in Vaitheeswaran Koil, the temple of the healing Shiva and one of the nine Navagraha shrines, before Chidambaram itself. The Thillai Nataraja temple is where Shiva is worshipped as the dancer, and it contains the Chidambara Rahasyam — a sanctum that famously holds nothing at all, which is the point being made. Spreading this over two days rather than one is the difference between visiting these places and rushing them. Accommodation is not included, so you choose where you stay; we can suggest options in either town.

It could be driven in one day, but you would spend most of it in the car. The sites are spread across the delta and the two-day version exists so that each one gets the time it needs.
