Overview

Pudukkottai is the district most visitors to Tamil Nadu drive straight past, which is exactly why it is worth a day. Sittanavasal is the reason to come. The cave has second-century Jain frescoes — painted, not carved — and they are among the oldest surviving paintings in India after Ajanta. They are faint, and they are extraordinary, and there is almost never a crowd. Narthamalai's Vijayalaya Choleeswaram is early Chola, which is to say it predates the great temples at Thanjavur and shows you what the Cholas were building before they were building on that scale. Thirumayam Fort closes the day: seventeenth-century Sethupathi work, with a rock-cut temple inside the walls. This is a quiet day of old, small, remarkable things rather than a day of famous ones.

Questions

What is at Sittanavasal?+

A Jain cave complex with second-century frescoes, among the oldest surviving paintings in India. The paintings are faded and photography rules are enforced at the site.

Is this suitable for children?+

It is a day of archaeology rather than activity, and the sites involve uneven ground and some climbing at Thirumayam. Older children who like history do well; younger ones tend not to.

Are entry fees included?+

No. Temple and monument entry fees are paid at each site. Everything to do with the vehicle — driver, tolls, parking, permits — is already in the fare.

What is included in the price?+

Private AC car (up to 3 passengers), Professional driver familiar with historical routes, Driver allowances, tolls, parking, permits. The fare you see is the published fare — tolls, parking and the driver's allowance are already inside it, so there is nothing to settle with the driver at the end of the day.

What is not included?+

Temple and monument entry fees, Meals and beverages, Personal expenses. These are paid directly where they arise, and we tell you about them before you book rather than at the gate.

How is the price calculated?+

One fare for the whole group, not per person. A family of four pays the same as a couple.

How many people can travel?+

Between 1 and 3 people on one booking. For a larger party, call us and we will arrange a second vehicle rather than squeeze you into one.

Can I cancel, and what do I get back?+

Cancel more than 72 hours before departure and you are refunded in full. Between 48 and 72 hours, half the fare is refunded. Inside 48 hours there is no refund, because the vehicle and driver are already committed to your booking. Approved refunds reach the original payment method within 7–10 business days.

How long does it take?+

1 Day. That is the time we plan for; temples do not run to a timetable, and a driver who hurries you through a darshan is not doing his job.
