about 250 km from Thanjavur
Rameswaram (Ramanathapuram district)
An island temple town reached by a bridge across the sea, home to one of the twelve Jyotirlingas and the longest temple corridor in India.
Rameswaram sits on Pamban Island, off the south-eastern coast, and is reached by a road bridge running beside the old rail bridge across the sea. It is one of the four Char Dham sites and one of the twelve Jyotirlinga shrines, which is why pilgrims travel here from the far north of the country — often as the southern end of a journey that began at Kedarnath or Varanasi.
The Ramanathaswamy Temple is the reason to come. Its corridors are the longest of any temple in India, several hundred metres of pillars carved individually and receding further than a photograph manages to show. At the eastern tip of the island, Dhanushkodi is the town destroyed by the 1964 cyclone — a strip of sand between two seas, with the shells of a church and a railway station still standing.
This is not a day trip from Thanjavur. It is around 250 km each way, and doing it properly means at least two nights, usually paired with Madurai on the way. We arrange the journey to order rather than selling it as a fixed package.
