Trichy Airport to Thanjavur: Every Way to Get There
Sixty kilometres, about an hour and a half, and four ways to cover it — taxi, airport rank, bus or train. Which suits you depends on the hour you land.
Tiruchirappalli is the airport almost everyone flies into for the Chola delta, and Thanjavur is about 60 km east of it — roughly an hour and a half by road. There are four ways to cover that distance and they suit very different travellers.
A pre-booked taxi
The simplest, and what most visitors choose. The fare is fixed before you land, the driver waits inside the terminal with your name, and there is no negotiating at midnight with a bag in each hand. Our sedan transfer is ₹2,500 per journey and the eight-seater is ₹3,500.
Flights are tracked, so a late arrival does not cost you the booking, and the driver waits up to 60 minutes after landing at no extra charge. Tolls, parking and the driver's allowance are inside the fare — the figure quoted is the figure paid.
An airport taxi on the day
Available, and fine in daylight. You will negotiate, the fare will vary, and the vehicle is whatever is next in the queue. It usually costs less than a pre-booked transfer and occasionally more, particularly late at night when the queue is short and the driver knows it.
Bus
There is no direct airport bus. You would take a local service into Trichy city and change to a Thanjavur bus from the central bus stand — cheap, frequent, and roughly two and a half to three hours with the connection. Sensible if you are travelling light and unhurried; unpleasant with luggage after a long flight.
Train
Trichy Junction to Thanjavur is a short, frequent rail journey and genuinely pleasant. The catch is at both ends: you still need to get from the airport to the junction, and from Thanjavur station to your hotel. For a traveller with one bag and time to spare it is the most enjoyable option on this list.
Which to choose
If you land after dark, or with family, or with more luggage than hands, book the transfer in advance. If you are travelling alone in daylight and want the cheaper option, the train is a better experience than the bus for a similar effort.
Either way, going on to Kumbakonam instead of Thanjavur is about 90 km and two hours or so. We quote that route on request rather than publishing a fare, because it varies with the vehicle.
