How to Reach the Navagraha Temples from Thanjavur

The nine Navagraha temples are not in one place, and that is the first thing worth understanding before you plan the trip. Eight of them are scattered around Kumbakonam, roughly 40 km north-east of Thanjavur, in a loop that takes most of a day to drive. The ninth, Tirunallar, sits further south in the Karaikal district and adds a real detour rather than a short hop. Anyone telling you the circuit is a half-day has left something out.

That geography is why almost nobody does this by public transport. The temples are 15 to 40 km apart, the buses between them are infrequent and do not run in circuit order, and a day that should take fifteen hours turns into three. There are three practical ways to do it, and they suit different people.

A seat on the group tour

The cheapest way in. Our Navagraha group tour runs at from ₹1,500 per person for a 15 hours day, departing early from Thanjavur. You share a vehicle with up to fifteen other pilgrims, the route is fixed, and the timing is not yours to change. For a solo traveller or a couple this is far and away the best value — the same day in a private car costs several times more, and the temples do not care which vehicle you arrived in.

The trade-off is the fixed schedule. If someone in the group wants longer at Suriyanar Koil, that time comes out of somewhere else.

A private car for your group

Our private Navagraha car package is ₹2,500 for the whole vehicle, not per person, for a 15 hours day. For three people that works out cheaper per head than three group seats, and you get the day on your own terms — longer where you want longer, and a driver who waits rather than a bus that leaves.

This is the option most families take. It is also the only sensible one if anyone in the party is elderly, because the walking between shrine and vehicle is the tiring part of the day, not the driving.

Arranging it yourself

Perfectly possible, and worth being honest about what it involves: a car hire for the day, a driver who knows which temple is which, and a route order that does not double back. Our self-drive-style day rentals start at ₹4,500 per day for a sedan, which sounds cheaper than the packaged tour until you add the driver and the fuel, and until the first wrong turn.

When to go

October to March. The delta is hot from April, punishingly so in May, and the north-east monsoon breaks around late October — which sounds like a reason to avoid it and is not, because the rain here comes in bursts rather than all day and the countryside is at its best immediately after. December and January are the most comfortable months to be walking on stone in bare feet.

Festival days change everything. Amavasya, and the days associated with individual planetary deities, draw very large crowds to specific temples, and a circuit that normally takes fifteen hours will not. If you are going for a particular remedy on a particular day, tell us when you book so the route is ordered around it.

Where to start

If you are flying in, Tiruchirappalli is the nearest airport and Kumbakonam is about 90 km from it. If you are already in Thanjavur, the whole circuit runs from your hotel door and back. ## Questions people ask
