5 Unforgettable Spiritual Day Trips from Thanjavur

Thanjavur is an unusually good base. Almost everything worth seeing in the Chola delta is within two and a half hours of it, which means you can sleep in one hotel for a week and still see somewhere different every day. These are the five day trips we run most often, in rough order of how far you have to drive.

1. Kumbakonam and Darasuram

About 40 km, an hour each way. Kumbakonam has more working temples within walking distance of each other than anywhere else in the delta, and just outside it at Darasuram stands the Airavatesvara Temple — the third of the three Great Living Chola Temples and the most finely carved of them. Where Thanjavur overwhelms by scale, Darasuram rewards a slow walk around the base of the building.

2. The nine Navagraha temples

The full circuit, and the reason a great many people come to this part of Tamil Nadu at all. Eight temples around Kumbakonam and a ninth further south, done as one long day of roughly fifteen hours. A seat on the group departure is from ₹1,500 per person; the private car for your own party is ₹2,500.

It is a long day and it is not a sightseeing itinerary — people do this circuit for a reason. If yours involves a particular temple on a particular day, say so when you book.

3. The Great Living Chola Temples

Three temples, one UNESCO inscription: Brihadeeswarar at Thanjavur, Gangaikonda Cholapuram to the north, and Airavatesvara at Darasuram. Seeing all three in a day is the clearest way to understand what the Cholas were doing across two centuries — the ambition of the first, the refinement of the last.

Gangaikonda Cholapuram is the quiet one. It draws a fraction of the visitors the Thanjavur temple does, for no good reason.

4. Trichy — Srirangam and the Rockfort

About 60 km west. Srirangam, on an island in the Kaveri, is among the largest functioning Hindu temple complexes anywhere in the world, laid out in seven concentric enclosures, and counted first among the 108 Divya Desams. Thiruvanaikaval nearby is one of the five Pancha Bhoota Sthalams, the temple of the water element, with a spring in the sanctum. In the middle of the city the Rockfort rises straight out of the street with a Ganesha shrine at the top of a stairway cut into the stone.

It is also where the airport is, so a lot of visitors see it on the way in or out rather than as a separate day.

5. Chidambaram

The longest of the five at about 110 km, and the strangest. The Thillai Nataraja Temple enshrines Shiva as the cosmic dancer, and it is the Pancha Bhoota Sthalam of akasha — space. What that means in practice is the Chidambaram Rahasyam, a shrine where the object of worship is empty air behind a screen. There is nothing to see, and that is the doctrine rather than a disappointment.

A sixth, for the quiet

If you have already done the temples and want something else, Pudukkottai is about 55 km south and almost nobody goes. Jain cave paintings at Sittanavasal among the oldest surviving murals in southern India, a rock-cut temple inside the walls of Thirumayam fort, and early Pallava and Chola rock-cut work at Narthamalai. What is the best day trip from Thanjavur?

For most first-time visitors, the Great Living Chola Temples — three UNESCO-inscribed temples in one day, which is the clearest way to understand what the Cholas built. Pilgrims usually choose the Navagraha circuit instead.

Do these trips include a guide?

Only where the tour says so. The heritage tours include a government-registered guide and monument entry; the temple circuits are driver-led, because at a working temple a priest rather than a guide is who you want.
